Mirabai, the revered Bhakti poet and devotee of Lord Krishna, is celebrated across India for her devotional songs and spiritual wisdom. While she is widely known as the queen of Chittorgarh, not many are aware that she was born in Merta, a small kingdom nestled between Jaipur and Jodhpur in Rajasthan.
History of Merta
Merta was the kingdom of the Mertia Rathore Rajputs, with Rao Duda, Mirabai's grandfather, being one of its prominent rulers in the early 16th century. The fort and palaces built by Rao Duda still stand as testament to the kingdom's rich history. Despite facing numerous battles, including conflicts with Sher Shah Suri, Merta remained steadfast in its principles, notably refraining from marrying its daughters into the Mughal families—a rarity among royal lineages. Mirabai herself was married into the Sisodia family of Chittorgarh, yet tragedy struck when her brother Jaimal, who ruled Merta, was killed in battle, leading to the kingdom's eventual merger with Jodhpur.
